Bould Designer, Sangyu Xi, Wins 2022 James Dyson Award for Scoliosis Brace Design

Bould designer, Sangyu Xi, received the 2022 James Dyson Award for ‘Airy’, her innovative scoliosis brace developed as her capstone project at University of Cincinnati with Professor Peter Chamberlain advising.

Scoliosis is often diagnosed in teenagers who are sometimes quite self-conscious and existing braces can compound a feeling of awkwardness. Airy, with its design forward form factor and option for material personalization, presents a much more upbeat, positive image to address the emotional aspects of scoliosis treatment. Sangyu also incorporated a wear time sensor and developed a mobile app to help patients and their support team track progress.

Bould Design congratulates Sangyu on her achievement. Deep empathy combined with a focus on function and artful formgiving resulted in a meaningful product concept. We also thank the James Dyson Awards for putting a spotlight on young designers who are making a difference!
